All library users should follow Butler University protocols. The collections of the Irwin Library and the Ruth Lilly Science Library are available for use by current Butler students, faculty and staff.  Others can look at items in the library but would need a special borrower's card or use their home public library's interlibrary loan service to request and check items out.

The general public may visit the Butler University Libraries and read or browse the collections. Those who live in Marion, Hendricks, Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Shelby, and Johnson counties may receive borrowing privileges (become a special borrower) for one year for a fee of $50.

Butler Libraries encourages alumni and others to use the resources and services of their local public library.  With a public library patron account, public libraries provide access to online databases off-site, interlibrary loan services, and print collections.  Butler's direct interlibrary loan service and access to Butler’s subscription databases are not available to those who aren't currently working at or enrolled at Butler.
