For history and theory research papers, Chicago style is commonly used. For music education research papers, Turabian style is used.

The Chicago Manual of Style web site includes a quick guide, resources for students, and more.

Check Butler Libraries citation LibGuide which includes a section on Chicago and Turabian citation styles. Also check out a quick guide on Citing Music Sources in Your Essay and Bibliography.
