The Butler War Song was written by John Heiney, class of 1923. The date of writing is unknown, but the words first appeared in the 1924 Drift. The published version of the sheet music, arranged by Fran Frey, has no publication date but features on the cover the bulldog Butler's Bill in front of Jordan Hall. This indicates that the sheet music was published in 1928 or later (Butler moved to the Fairview campus in 1928).
